Sometimes you don’t need help, sometimes you want to get involved and be the one to help others….whatever you want, is what we do. We limit the calls to 2-3 people so that we don’t take up too much of anyones time. My story is different because most people with CHD find out when they are a child, not at 20 years old. The transition to accept this diagnosis was extremely rough, but I believe everything happens for a reason. Of course, there are times I sit and wonder why me? Why do I have to go through this? I was born with aortic stenosis and had my first open heart surgery when I was 21, where my aortic valve was replaced with a mechanical valve. Having CHD can feel burdensome at times, but it has really helped me understand how precious life is. CHD has brought so many extraordinary individuals into my life -- one of my closest friends also has a CHD! I even found my dream job because of my CHD - I work as a biostatistician at my hospital's cardiac center, helping improve outcomes and research new clinical trials for CHD. Since living with CHD requires lifelong care, it is so important for heart patients to have the right foundation for their life in addition to a network of support to reach out to. Hi, my name is Taylor Larsen, I am 21 years old, a Hi, my name is Taylor Larsen, I am 21 years old, and I was born with tetralogy of fallot. I had my first open heart surgery when I was 6 months old. 19 years later I underwent my second open heart surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic to replace the flap with a biological valve from a cow! I am so thankful for the blessings that has come with having CHD. Having two open heart surgeries helps you comprehend the true beauty of life. On a spiritual level having CHD has gifted me with the ability to walk through this life with an open heart to help others cultivate unconditional love for themselves and others.
